I lurk mostly on this forum just to read the posts...but I do have to speak up on this issue between Iguanaboy and SkylineGTR. First off, yes iguana boy has some major husbandry issues to address.. BUT skyline, you're still a newbie to iguana's as well from everything I've read. What makes you the big expert? You were still asking newbie style questions not even a couple weeks ago. Your attitude and offensiveness is not needed. Not to mention, I've done iguana rescue work for a while now and I've seen hundreds of iguanas in and out of my home. Some of them never had UVB lights.. but they were heavily supplemented.. would go into breeding colors every year and were amazingly healthy despite the lack of UV lights. When checked over by a qualified vet they were given a clean bill of health. I'm not saying he shouldn't have a UV light.. BUT.. if he supplements enough, the lack of won't kill the iguana in a hurry. What he does need to do is this:

Increase and diversify their food.
1. Avoid Romaine and other lettuces. Leafy greens are good. Kale, Turnip, Mustard, Collard (Very high in Calcium so one of the best greens to feed) bok choi... Those should make up the bulk of their diet.

2. Fruits such as mango, pears, apples, grapes, canteloupe.. other melons should be offered as well all chopped finely.. the smaller pieces food is in, the easier it is for them to digest and the more of it they can eat. Use a food processor.. works wonders.

3. Other veggies: Sweet potato, squash, green beans, peas.. some corn... they'll even take rice. The sweet potato and squash should be grated and diced so its easier for them to eat.

That cage you have iguana boy... will last 4 months if you're lucky to keep them alive that long.. with the proper diet you should be able to.. and the proper temps... ALWAYS keep fresh food in their bowls....you should give them a big enough water bowl to soak in. Often enough they'll make your job easier and poo in their water. The other thing is.. get rid of the repti-carpet... I prefer using cypress mulch since it holds humidity much better...

Now I must say something...as a rescuer (Lucien), you should know that anything particulate (that has particles that could be ingested) should not be used as a substrate...repticarpet is just fine or newspaper or paper towels...You are only looking for trouble and big vet bills if you continue to use cypress mulch or anything similar...it is NOT safe...I have heard enough horror stories from unsuspecting people using the "safe" items for their igs...spray your igs every day or get a humidifier for humidity...I also have kept my mouth shut through all this hullaballou and I hope it ends soon...so we can get back to the informative helpful forum we once knew...those of you who use the offensive language will eventually be banned, unfortunately banning complete ISPs along with it...is this what you want? then knock it off....

As for the heat rock...they really serve no purpose except to pose as a threat of burns for those babies...Cut the cord and put it under the basking light...guaranteed they will still use it but properly with the "sun" shining from above...please email me if you need private help...Lyn (40 yrs old ) with 4 gorgeous adult igs....

I agree for animals that eat crawling things, that any particulate substrate is bad... but I've always fed my igs from bowls raised up off the substrate.. usually in the crook of one of their branches... so never had any problems whatsoever with ingestion of the cypress mulch. After talking with many people about how best to house iguanas (who've owned them for years...even when I'd just started rescues)we came up with cypress mulch.. though I suppose if you want completely safe that holds humidity really well, Eco Earth would probably be better.. (as long as it becomes really soft and mushy in water) I, personally have never had a problem with the cypress mulch, nor have any of my iguana's ever eaten any of it.

Well for the record I still disagree... I have seen photos of iguanas who have pooped out socks (I know nasty) and they lick to "smell " their surroundings so there is the chance of ingestion and blockage...I see where you are coming from, and I know my igs wouldnt eat certain things because I know them, but strange igs will possibly try to eat especially ones who have been starved or were never on that particular type of bedding...good luck to you and your igs...Lyn
