Uro with growth on mouth that fell off??

Katosbabe Jan 13, 2004 07:29 PM

Hi, I am new to the forum. I have a little bably Uro. Just the sweetest little thing. Named, Buju........now when I got Buju, he had a growth on his bottom lip right out front. I have been trying to get some info on it but with not much luck. Thought it might be Hyperkeratotic dematitis (this info I found on kingsnake.com) But there really wasn't that much about it. But then today!, the growth was gone. I noticed him rubbing about his face alot, I thought that maybe it was itchy. Any ideas on what this might be? Any help is greatly appreciated! I am new to lizard parenting and was somewhat worried for the little guy, but am now relieved that it is gone.
Thanks for any help offered.

it was probably a common mouth disease that uro's sometimes get. If it was green or blueish colored than thats what it was. It won't hurt him now that its off of him and if you would have gone to the vet he would have just gave you a precription.

Thanks. Not sure if I would say it was green or blueish, it was just a dark colour, looked like it had formed in layers protruding out from his lip. Looked like it had quite a few cracks in it which made me presume it was very dry. It was very hard and crusty.
Now if it is this commom disease, will it come back again? If he gets it again should I just ignore it and hopefully it will fall off again?
Do you know of any sites with info on this disease you speak of?
I read on kingsnake that if there is a growth around the mouth that goes into the mouth then it is probably mouth rot, but his did not go into the mouth. Just a growth on the outside.
Really appreciate your feedback! So much to learn about these little guys! Love em though! I will try to post a pic so you guys can see how sweet he is!

Hello,

Yes, this is almost certainly a Keratin build up (Hyperkeratotic dermatitis). It is supposed to be linked with feeding, but I am reluctant to agree with this, as out of my collection of Uromastyx (that all have the same diet), two Moroccans have got it. They don't have it all the time, it just occasionaly comes and then it disappears for a while. It doesn't harm them.

Thank you. If you have time, could you tell me what is in the diet for your uro's? So far Buju seems especially fond of peas. Has eaten some dandelion greens, bok choy. Am trying to feed him some tofu also.
As I said, I just got him recently and am still learning. Any suggestions on feeding? He really doesn't seem to eat alot. But I assume that is normal considering his size. Apprx. 5" from nose to tip of tail. From the posts I also assume that they can be slow to grow. Yesterday he ate 4 small peas. Seems so miniscule! But his tummy can't be that large.
So I guess I can relax about the keratin build up then....appreciate that info......Thanks.
Sharon
