how much should a juvie eat? ........or grow........

herpy Jan 13, 2004 08:51 PM

I have a 4-5 month old that Ive had for about 4 months. He has probably doubled in size. Sometimes he worries me because he eats in spurts. He'll eat up to 10 good sized crickets or meal worms a day. Then he wont eat much for days. It seems like he wants variety, but isn't interested in garden worms slugs or moths. Im going to try hissing cockroaches. He is 3 1/4" snout to vent and 10 1/2" overall. I just wanted him to grow big and fast and offer him all he could eat, but he doesnt seem to eat like a beardie for example. He also doesnt ever use his water dish so I have to spray him all day. I think Im doing everything right. Any advice?

If you take care of him properly (no slugs, worms, moths or other crap you catch in your yard), he should continue growing quickly. Males can reach 24" at a yr. old. It's pretty foolish if you actually feed him insects that you catch outside as you don't know where they've been (pesticides, bacteria, etc.).

It's pretty common for them to eat in spurts, eating a lot in one day and then taking a day off.

If you stick to the standards (appropriate sized crickets/worms), and the cage temps are good (approx. 95°F air temp under the basking light), he should be ok.
