?'s about crickets, feeding in general, along with some other things

lollipopgestapo Jan 13, 2004 10:09 PM

ok. a few questions. sorry if they are tedious.

i recently got a crested, on xmas eve to be exact. i gave him some crickets for the first time last week i think and i tried buying them the other night but the crazy thing was that within 5 mins in the car they all DIED because of the extreme cold in NY.

anyway. that really has nothing to do with what i have to say. im just trying to organize my thoughts.
that day i also bought one of those feeding rocks for crickets. ya know the ones you put the calcium powder on the bottom of so that the crickets can get coated in the powder and then there is a little hole in the rock that they can crawl in and out of. does anyone have this sort of thing? is it successful?
also, how many crickets will they eat at one time? also how many crickets should i put in the tank at one given time? i just gave him mealworms tonight and it was the first time he ate the worms while at my house and he ate four of them. i was really surprised to look into the tank and find no worms in the dish.

oh and what should i do about feeding the crickets? someone at the pet store suggested i just drop a piece of dried fruit in the tank for them or wherever i keep them.

and as far as the tank cleaning thing goes, how iften do you guys clean the tanks?
i just cleaned mine yesterday. Petco's care sheet says once a week but i thnk that is a little excessive.
*shrugs*

i know there were a few others things i wanted to ask but i just cant remember now. if i do i will come back.
im getting my Rhac book soon, im very excited about reading it.

ta ta.

Try feeding your crested the Sandfire Superfood diet for cresteds. It is designed to be a complete meal replacement eliminating the need for crickets or worms. It contains all the essentials, you just mix it with water 1 to 1 by volume. Offer this diet every other day. You can still offer crickets if you want once or twice a week just to give your crested some activity. We actually use the gargoyle diet on all or young animals because it contains more protien and helps to grow them a little faster.

When you say "extreme cold" in New York, how cold?????
I doubt its as cold as Manitoba, and my crickets and lizards don't die if you put them under your jacket.

I live in Wisconsin, so it can get pretty cold here. When I used to buy my crickets at the pet shop I took a small 6 pack size cooler and had one of those small heat packs that you put in the microwave. I heated the pack, wrapped it in a towel and put it in the cooler. Took it in the pet shop with me and never had any problems with dead crickets. Good luck!
