Green Western Rat Snakes can someone help

electricbluescat Jan 14, 2004 01:44 AM

These are one of my favorite species of rat snakes. A while back I saw pair of 2003 for sale on the classifieds for $650
are they rare cuz the price was so high? Would daytona be a good place to find them at the 2004 daytona reptile expo? also could someone post some pics of them?

thanks,
john

They're expensive because they are very rare, yes.. They are only found in two remote locations in the US, and are technically illegal to bring out of Arizona. They're native to two small mountain rages of AZ, above 7000ft elevation. I saw a few while field herping in the summer, and I love these guys as well. Very distinct. Here are two photos that I took of a Green rat in the Sonoran Desert live museam.

Thank you for posting the pictures
Womders if the price will ever come down on these serpents?
Do you think I could get a good deal on them in Daytona at the Daytona show?

You never know what you'll find at Daytona.. As for price, i doubt it, as AZ's legal status on them is probably never going to change. There are a few people working with them, so you just need to keep your eyes peeled and have the money on hand. I tried to trade some higher end boids for that pair for sale right now but the person only wants cash. doh. heh

Yeap Daytona is an awsome show. I plan to get at least 1 pair of jungle carpet pythons the high yellow ones at the Daytona show.I looked for some of the green western ratsnakes last year in 2003 at the show and couldn't find any.

I was at Daytona in "03" and came away with a nice adult female B. rosalie. There was also a Honduran S. triaspis. Maybe one year your "greens" will show up!

Actually they aren't rare in Arizona. They are found in many of the Sky Island mtn. ranges in s.e. AZ, including the Quinlan and Baboquivari Mtns (pic), Santa Ritas, Pajaritas, Empires, Whetstones, and Chiricahuas to name a few of the ones I know of. And in these mountains they are common and quite well protected. The state of Arizona is considering listing the species next year, however, based on a few people saying they are rare. Right now quite a few AZ herpers have them, but they can't be sold according to the state's laws. Daytona is probably not a very good place to find them either, but there are a number of breeders who work with triaspis. Try Bill Gillingham at the Great Valley Serpentarium. I think that price you mentioned was a little high. You can probably pick one up for $200-$250....

Beautiful snakes maybe I can find them at the Daytona expo.
I acutally have family in Tuscon Arizona. I have an uncle out there. My parents used to live out west but I was born in Ga.
Az has some amazing mountain ranges and with one heck of a sweet view.

Thanks, John.

Georgia has some nice mtns. too and some pretty neat snakes. Some of my favorites come from there..ratsnakes..LOL.

I have the feeling you might want to come back to AZ some day, at least for a visit. Here's another pic, Apache Springs in the Santa Ritas, south of Tuscon, just to whet your appetite a little more. Can you tell I like the mtns. there too, and this is another of the good green rat spots
