carefresh/critter litter?

symatic Jan 14, 2004 02:29 AM

I've been using newspaper for quite sometime now, but i'm starting to dislike the crumpled paper look and the lack of absorption. The above two products seem to be the most reasonable as far as mold and absorption goes, but i fear impaction(is this a rare occurrence?). I know i could feed in different enclosures, but i wish to avoid this. Sorry for the length. Any experience or suggestions with these or other products.

Thanks sym

Carefresh is in my mind the absolute BEST substrate there is well in my opinion, I have used it for years and love it. I also use aspen to, but I will say I do prefer Carefresh.

If you want to avoid ingesting the substrate, but don't want to feed outside their enclosure, try putting down newspaper over the top of the substrate just for feeding day.

Just a suggestion. Sorry I can't comment about those choices of substrate.

Though I don't currently own a ball python, I have used CareFresh for my mice and found it to be over priced and highly dusty. My mice didn't seem affected by the dust but I didn't like it. I would pour some of the carefresh into the mouse bin and clouds of dust would puff out. I typically wound up getting kleenix's full of dark grey particules when I blew my nose after cleaning the bins.

Aspen I have used for mice and my corn snake and find it alot less dusty and alot cheaper than CareFresh (about 1/4 the price for the same volumn of bedding). Aspen is pretty absorbant and very good at hiding odours as well. I certainly would recommend it for any snake, especially if they are normally fed outside the cage or over a sheet placed ontop of the bedding.
