Question about my pair of leos...

restlesswind444 Jan 14, 2004 02:38 AM

These are 2 of my leos. On top is female floid (46g) and on the bottom is a new albino male i just acquired(51g). The breeder that i got him from told me that if i were to breed these two i would come out with a bunch of hets looking like normals, and that i should breed the brothers and sisters together in order to get cool patterns such as tangerine albinos. Is this correct and if so what should i do to avoid problems such as deformities and death from inbreeding. Also, what kind of albino is my male? (tremper, rainwater, patternless, bell, etc.)
Thanks for ur help,
peace, tunes, & geckos...
chris

Okay. I will be the first to admit my breeding information is somewhat sketchy at times, but I have done my research over the past few months to prepare for this season. My suggestions to you are this:

Breed the pair. After 6-9 months you should be able to see which ones are going to have the nicest colors/patterns. Take that gecko back to the father (not a sibling, a parent), in order to get the gene expressed. You didn't say what your goal was to breed, so I assumed you were trying for Albinos.

Also, again I am no expert on albino, because I myself work with hypo carrottails, but I believe thats a Bell Albino.

I agree with Jeff about breeding the offspring back to dad, or even breeding them together. You've got a jungle albino, most likely Tremper, IMO. The babies would most likely be colorful, possibly hypo, but definitely het for jungle albino. If you were to hatch out pretty hypo tangerines, I'd consider breeding the offspring together, if you happen to get male and female. Overall, though, your best bet is always to bring in new blood, if possible. But, line breeding works, as long as you identify and eliminate any defects and not breed them back into your stock. (I don't mean kill them; just don't use them for breeding)

If you breed the offspring back to the father, you'd get a higher statistical rate of albino offspring than het to het.

Good looking geckos, by the way.

cool, first of all, thanks a lot for the insight! so let me just clear this up, what ur telling me is that most of the offspring probably wont look like normals, but will be colorful like my guys and that breeding a girl back to dad is ok and so is breeding clutchmates if necessary but to avoid this if possible...what about breeding a male back to mom?, i am not breeding for any specific triat just whatever may come up, hopefully, tangerine albino carotttail
thanks,
