Male Leuc calling!

Bdimas Jun 05, 2003 05:06 PM

I recently bought a pair of Leucomelas at Frog Day. The male is calling. Should I put a Petri dish under the coco hut? They do go in there every now and then, but I think their favorite spot is under some creeping fig that kinda forms a small cave. Should I put a dish in there also? Or do you guys think that its to early for them to breed because I've only had them for 3 weeks, and they've only been in their tank for 2 weeks? Thanks in advance!

Just because he is calling doesn't mean she is ready. I bought a reverse trio at frog day last year and he called for 6 months before she bred and they just laid last week so calling doesn't nessacarily mean eggs. Mine prefer any plant that has an axis.

I agree with greenstar but, on the other hend it could very well be time for them to start. It would not hurt anything to go ahead and place the petri under the hut and a bromeliad in with them if you don't already have one. After all, my azureus laid 4 days after I got them.

I do two things really three things to get my leucs to breed. 1) I move them into a new tank at the beginning of every new breeding season this almost always will result in breeding because the male have to call and guard a territory more vigorously when they have not established it and thsi also seems to bring breeding about as it has in the last 2 years of breeding. 2) I cycle my leucs before the tank switch, something most hobbyist don't due but I let the tank temp drop along with feeding humidty and lighting (which is very irregular) and then just before teh tank switch bring the temp to around 78-80 with more misting (humidty is 100% YEAR ROUND) and a regular 14 hours on and 10 hours off. 3)I waited till the frogs are 18 months old before trying to breed them. also they can lay as regularly every 4-5 days but the clucths are usually 2-3 good eggs and 16 embroyless eggs.

Just thought I would let you know
