If I was going to feed cat or dog food the only thing I would feed is Wysong all meat foods that have no fillers. I think they have beef, chicken, turkey and maybe some kind of fish. http://www.wysong.net/
I feed rodents ,fruit, and insects./ thanks Russ

I'd avoid the cat and dog food except on rare occasions.
I'll use it every once in a great while when I run out of crickets (Mine isn't that big yet.), but it shouldn't be even close to one of its main foods.
Rodents, fruit, and maybe some other things thrown in. Like an egg (Most people prefer cooked because it's safer, some do raw.)
I've also heard of people using cans of tuna (with supplements added.) and ground turkey with supplements also.
Cat and Dog food, in general, aren't the best things out there.
I have fed mine the following:
eggs
ground turkey
fuit: bananas, oranges, blueberries, apples, grapes
(usaully mixed with the turkey)
crickets & mealworms (when he was young)
frozen/thawed quail
frozen/thawed mice
He seems to only want the mice now. I mix vitamins and CA with the turkey or eggs too.

While giving a wide variety of appropriate food items is certainly possible and can be successful this practice also makes it much more difficult to balance the diet correctly.
For all species well fed rodents (insects for juveniles) should make up the majority of the diet. Blue Tegus and Argentine B&W Tegus also thrive on a 100% rodent diet and Red Tegus should be offered a some sweet fruits on a weekly basis. Fruit can be offered to the other forms of tegus but "appears" to be necessary for Red Tegus at this time and is not necessary for the other forms.
I am aware of a stomach content analysis that showed that a high percentage of a population of Argentine Tegu was made up primarily of palm fruits. However I believe this sample was only taken at a particular time of the year and a particular location. This would mean, of course, that whatever food was abundant at the particular time of the analysis would be prevalent. I can think of a Mona Island Rhinoceros Iguana study that showed that during a particular time of the year their diest were almost exclusively made up of a giant caterpillar and Rhinoceros Iguanas are primarily herbivorous and would not do well in captivity maintained on a high animal protein diet.
Over the last 14 years or so I have experimented with a variety of diets and foods and it has always been that rodents win out. The important part of this is that the rodents MUST be of high quality and very well fed prior to offering them to tegus. Many quality rodent businesses offer clean and very well fed rodents that are excellent for feeding tegus.

Just wondering if anyone has fed hissers tyo their tegus, and what were the results? Did they eat, and how was the feeding response, vigorous or lackluster? Thanx for any responses, dave

I have used them (Hissers and Death's Head) and the juvenile-sub adult tegus that I fed them to destroyed them. They are fairly easy to gutload nicely also.

Thanx, I have a colony of probably 200 hissers that i just keep letting multiply because I actually enjoy watching them and feeding them and handling them. Im setting up for the purchase of my first tegu and the thought occurred to me that I could possibly thin out my hissers at the same time as giving the tegu a varied diet. I like to get all my questions answered early, so thanx again. dave
