It is a big business in places like SW Missouri where they are protected but easy prey for poachers. I used to work those massive (sometimes 200 acre) glades or "balds" looking for rare plants and saw 4 and caught one small collored lizard myself and let it go (I just wanted to check one out). It 'aint that hard...most people just go on those open glades and start flipping rocks and looking under ledges. That's where people find them and I've busted several people poaching them and called the game warden on their as#!

The poachers leave tell-tale signs, like flipped rocks and dig marks all over these glades. Some people even shoot them for the hell of it.

They are a pretty, popular native lizard - I just hope that people are not getting these wild caught lizards, at least not from Missouri. They may be getting another spp. of this group that I'm not familar with though.

Parts of the Ozarks are still so remote that you can easily go and find herps in some distant location without anyone finding you - or rarely finding you like I did! LOL I used to bush hog through the Ozarks with a compass so I saw some crazy stuff in my 6 years there, people and other critters.
