Sometimes they're not what you expected - Albino Ghost Ball **PICS** (dialup warning)

nerd_inc Jan 14, 2004 11:36 AM

Here are some pics of one of our Albino Ghost balls, as well as some comparison photos between the Albino Ghost & a couple of its siblings. Upon hatching we weren't quite sure what was going on with them, but as these animals have grown some distinct differences have become evident.

Albino Ghost

The most noticeable difference we've seen (besides the intense color) is all the orange blushing coming through in the white splotches within the yellow patterning. None of the other albinos from this clutch have exhibited the same orange that seems to fill in more & more with each shed.

Here's a high-contrast albino from the same clutch:

Albino Ghost w/albino sibling

Albino Ghost with high-contrast albino sibling

Obviously we're looking at some pretty subtle differences here, some of which are difficult to capture on camera...hopefully we'll continue to see more of the orange coloration show up throughout the white pattern blotches as they grow. We'll update photos with color & pattern changes as they occur, and bring them to future shows so that the differences can be appreciated in person.

Albino X ????? Orange ghost????
What ghost? You do not mention what type of ghost. Next question do they shed without a pattern?
Nice looking animal.

Do normal albinos leave a pattern in the shed? I wouldn't think they would but never having one (or for that mater even seeing a live one out of the egg) I don't know.

I knew a big corn snake breeder who was confident he could identify hypomelanistic albino corns on pattern subtleties. Even if the ghost albino ball is only subtly different from a "plain" albino it will still be useful for breeding (ditto or the pastel albino I suppose). Cross the hypomelanistic albino ball with an axanthic and make triple hets!

Speaking of axanthic, when will we start seeing some axanthic pattern mutilations? Cross the "hybino" with one of those and make quadruple hets! If all four genes are on different chromosomes a pair of quadruple recessive hets should less than 1 in 3 normal looking babies (and most all of those will be het for at least one of the genes).

That is WHY I asked the question.

The ghost component here is an Orange Ghost/hypo, which is what is probably lending all that extra color to the white blotches within the pattern. They do shed clear - perhaps next time we'll post pics of a ghost, albino & albino ghost shed just for comparison. Would be pretty interesting to see them side by side.

Thanks for the kind words!

...whether or not the orange continues to come in within the pattern & to what extent it may do so. If it bleeds through the majority of the pattern this could actually be very cool, but only time will tell.

As far as what's next...well, the snakes dictate that.

I don't think any of the Dbl. Homozygous Albino mutations will be much more exciting - nice high-contrast yellow though

the orange is also intensified and screams with more color.......

...........I wondered what would happen........

yes ,you would think, just a light colored albino........but I always wondered if it would be like corns (or boas)......
