How much protein does a BD need?

Jo_OscarsMom Jun 05, 2003 05:27 PM

I'm trying to forego the nasty crickets/worms in favor of greens & pellets. It seems like both lizards (10 mos and 3 mos) are eating all their greens and a few of the juvi pellets each day. I gave Oscar some unseasoned chicked - shredded - and she LOVED it! Is there something wrong with this diet? I want what's best for my babies but would prefer not to get back into the cricket/worm habit again, if possible. Your comments/suggestions, please. Jo

Honestly I dont think anyone knows exactly how much insect protein should be in their diet. There are breeders and keepers who raise and keep their dragons on just greens/veggies and rep cal pellets. I dont think I could do that. It just wouldnt feel right to me. Mine love live insects way too much and they simply will not eat rep cal. But others do it with success.

As for the cooked chicken - not seasoned. I dont know! But I have wondered the same exact thing. I have heard of monitor breeders feeding strictly cooked meats but have not heard it regarding beardeds. I would THINK that as long as the chicken is cooked all the way, not seasoned (no butter, salt etc) and isnt left in the cage very long it shouldnt be a problem. You just have to be careful of salmonella (sp?) and also that the chicken is not left out to spoil. Personally though I have not tried cooked meats. Right now I have plenty of other things for them to eat (greens, veggies, superworms, waxworms, roaches, grasshoppers (canned), crickets, etc)!

Maybe someone else will have more information for you. Goodluck, Lindsay

You can look into a product distributed by t-rex, but developed by Allen Repashy of Sandfire Dragon Ranch. It is called Sandfire Super Foods. You want to look at the Bearded Dragon Veggie Maintainance Formula. It has a great Nutrient profile, and can be used liberally on your veggies. They sell the small containers at pecto, but you can get in bulk directly from Allen. I use several of the diets, but mainly the Crested Gecko Diet for my Rhacs. You can find out more info and inquire at his forum.
