slytherin Jan 14, 2004 12:22 PM

hey also...just for conversation.....lets say one of these are pretty grown up like 5 feet etc. say they decide to constrict you. are they strong enough to take a person out? if so would it be around the neck or could they do it from the chest? not worried i'm 6'2" 280....just curious because they seem to be very heavy-bodied.

Welcome to the blood forum!

What size snake or blood are you keeping and is it a baby or juvie, or an adult?

I doubt it very much that even if your blood was ticked off for what ever reason or reasons, it would be remotedly interested in constricting either you or anyone for that matter. They do react however, by biting or thrashing, or spraying, but constrict? - NO!! They don't react the way you are describing and if you think that way, then you probably shouldn't own one; because! that thought is always going to be on your mind (what if ? oh no, one day it might). We have to go into a project or keeping these amazing animals, with the thought and mind set that they are capable of many things, one of them, not being constricting its owner for the sake of retaliating, or getting even. They can be aggressive at times, if they are not treated or properly handled, and if they are by nature one of the rare animals that we sometimes get - that just won't settle down, even with regular handling (but again rare!).

Wild caught animals are the more likely to not take to handling or settling down more so than would a cbb, animal. And even they have been known to settle down with frequent handling. If your animal was acquired as a juvie or other, and was cbb, even as an import, the likelihood that it would turn into a little devil later on is probably in the range of, 1 in a thousand.

I find that males are usually, the more aggressive of the bloods and short-tails, and that females are the more readily tractable and or placid of the genders of all three species. However, I have also found that males, can also be just as sweet and tractable as their female counter parts inherently speaking, or by default. It all really depends on the keeper and whether he or she is willing to do the necessary work to make their charge or charges acclimate and adjust to regular handling and cage servicing intrusions and whether they choose the right animals from the get-go.

I got me a adorable little baby...i am waiting to hear back from the dude i bought it from to find out exactley how old...i will assume 2 months. he's small but still seems like he's had a fair share of meals....ohhh as far as that constricting thing...i never feel that any of my reps will do that, infact i would dare them to fight me..lol (just kidding). i didnt want to concern anyone....i was just asking for sh#ts & giggles..lol i have never handled a full grown one & was curious just how strong adults actually become & if it was possible..i know a retic & a burm can take someone out but i was curious if bloods had that kind of strenght...so i figured i'd ask & see if anyone would answer..it was just a fictional question...i fear no snake ..lol so far...yea i been readin on them for awhile i have wanted one for a year or so & kept waiting & reading & finally i couldn't let this cute lil fella pass me by. I have done the research enough to grab him. He will be a great addition to my reptile room (a walk in closet).he's got a nice little tank with newspaper running up the sides for extra privacy, waterbowl big enough for him to soak ( which he seems to do for a lil while once every day or two). a nice store made rock hiding spot. by the end of the week he'll have another hide spot & his moss tray. my room's humidity stays round 70% so i just give a tiny spray in the morning since the room is already humid. well if there's anything you feel like chatting bout feel free angel. i'm new to the snake so i'm open for whatever,,

by the way if he's fed once a week...how big in a year?
if he's fed twice a week...how big in a year?

malcom Jan 14, 2004 02:38 PM

Seems to me your more worried about letting everyone know how big and strong you are!!You cannot say how big a snake will be after a years feeding on a set regime...they like us all grow at different speeds and have individual metabolisms..there are plenty of good websites to give you a rough idea...

slytherin Jan 14, 2004 03:02 PM

ahhh yes...always one...well my conversation had nothing to do with making me big & strong cuz first off i a chubby mess & dont give a sh@t...& i knew that a question like that might raise some eyebrows & i wanted to make it clear that it was not a concern but a simple curiosity about their strenght & if it matched up to some of the big pyhtons due to them being short but very wide. and my replys after that we're to assure who i was speaking with that i was confident in my ability & not afraid of my new pet. so if you're gonna come into MY conversation just to beef & be vague I'm sure there's plenty of other people you can go to.
have a good day

jordanm Jan 14, 2004 04:11 PM

Just make sure you arent sloppy with your blood, they do require specific temps and humidity requirements! It seems like you did your research tho. As for growth rates, as was said they all grow at different speeds and most of it depends on how much you feed them. For an example tho... a pretty hefty Borneo baby I picked up a couple years ago was probably about 2.3-3 feet after a year, and is now just over 5' and still growing pretty quickly quickly. Thats with hefty meals usually every other week, sometimes smaller ones every week. Good luck with your baby, I know that I enjoy mine immensley.

thanx.
yea i've waited this long because i kept reading about how quick things turn bad if you screw up so i decided to wait till i couldn't anymore & i have done a decent amount of reading here & other sources so i felt confident. as far as growth i know every animal is different but i was just looking to see if the replies led to any kind of average weight i could expect. didnt have much else to start conversation about as i am very new to bloods. but got info so it's all gravy. i'm sure once i figure out how to send pics i'll throw him on here...did you name yours? i named my guy Fat Body..lol if you ever saw full metal jacket the drill instructor called one of the overweight recruits that.

thanx

Hey,

How tame is your baby so far (I'm assuming it's a Red Blood)? I got my first blood a couple of weeks ago; named him Little Fury, as he still seems to have a bit of a temper.

As for your strength question . . . I can't imagine a blood constricting an adult human being, even if he wanted to. Which I don't think he would, since as far as I know snakes only constrict those things which they intend to eat.

Course I could be wrong.

Good luck with your blood,

well i've only had fat body for 3 days..so as tempted as i have been to play with him i'm trying to just go with the advice from robyn @ pro exotic's article said (the article that introduced me to my new pet) to just give em a few weeks & some solid feeds before i screw around with him... i will say though the second i opened the top to arrange some stuff he was solid still, cocked, & ready for fingers..lol so i assume that i have a little work ahead of me, but i doubt it's anything i can't handle (that's not a cocky remark..lol) . so far not to jinx myself but ever friend that was past me a horrible tempered reptile has become a friend to me.,...i just feel that if you respect it's space & go in confident & calm you can usually turn an animal from the darkside pretty quick... i hope i didnt just jinx it..lol

malcom Jan 14, 2004 05:05 PM

Hello mate...yes there is always one that percieves things the wrong way but if you have another look at the post it did come across that way...I have no "Beef" with you or anyone and am only to happy to assist you with any info that I can provide..good luck with the blood and nice choice of snake. : )

slytherin Jan 14, 2004 05:20 PM

no doubt, no hard feelings malcolm....so how many bloods do you have??

googo151 Jan 14, 2004 05:31 PM

Hey,
Ahh yes, I agree that there was a weird cockiness to your initial post, but I didn't think anything of it, it is just your style, but it's cool and just you being you, and that is cool with me. If I start to read into everything and anything that people write, we would all to quote Leonard, aka fat body, "Be in a world of S...!!". LOL!! Again, welcome to the blood forum and we are all here to learn and share what experience and knowledge we possess with each other; both new and old alike. It's all good!

lol yea i hear ya i just threw in my size because asking about if a blood could take me out i thought that someone might think i'm a 15 year old boy that's like 4 feet tall & scared to death of my own pet. meanwhile the truth was that a blood probably couldnt get a squeeze around this beer belly..lol

worldsocold Jan 14, 2004 07:09 PM

Good job with the blood, you should have looked up alot of this on your own and asked questions you couldn't find answers for. Sorry if you did this i just think its fiar that the owner of the animal know everything he/she can before the purchase. Good luck.

Feed your new pet well, grow him up, and then when he is “pretty grown up like 5 feet etc.”, make yourself a rat necklace. Not a real long one, mind you; more like the length of a pearl choker. Did I mention to kill the rats first? Okay, then crawl in the snake’s cage, lie down, and be very, very still. When your python first bites into one of the rats, you should start to twitch a bit in order to induce the snake to throw a coil or two around your neck and begin to constrict. If the darkness starts to close in around you, then you will have your answer. I half suspect, however, that were you to struggle violently, you might be able to disentangle yourself.

But, of course, I jest. Although you asked, “are they strong enough to take a person out?”, a more inclusive question might be “in the recorded history of humankind, has there ever been an instance of a blood python killing a human?” I believe the answer is “no.”

My suggestion would be to pay attention to the end with the teeth and the end that sprays urates, musk and feces. Worry not about the squeezing section in between. Welcome to the forum.

jordanm Jan 14, 2004 09:42 PM

LMAO Oh my Joan! I wouldn't suggest that at all! To answer the question a little more seriously tho if it did happen to get you around the neck for whatever reason it MIGHT strangle you. My blood likes to grab things by its tail when pretending to climb around...its pretty funny cause he usually falls, hence the tail grabbing. A little while ago he was climbing down the back of my chair and grabbed my neck..and was actually strangling me just by his weight, not in a violent way mind you and I just pushed him off, but if so posessed he could do it, although hes the only snake I've ever owned to not strike at me once. Anyways heres what you have to look forward to.
