Where to find plastic track for sliding glass doors???

kylewa Jan 14, 2004 01:28 PM

I have used the 1/4" aluminum track that Lowe's sells, but my problem is that once the glass is mounted in this type, you cannot take it out to get it really clean. I want to find the plastic track in different heights like they use on Vision enclosures so that I can take out the glass for cleaning. Does anyone know who sells this? Is there an online resource?

Thanks,
Kyle

Actually, you can get plastic track that is much nicer than what vision uses. It's great as long as the doors are not absolutely huge. I'll post a picture of a cage I built using the brown track from Rockler.com

I've also use the "tan" product made by Knap and Vogt. The product is actually orange and I much prefer the Rockler track.

Both have radiused edges for the glass to slide on, unlike the Visions I've seen. This reduces surface area and, therefore, friction. This also allows for small pieces of substrate to be chanelled away from the glass.

The cage pictures is 4' tall. The doors are just under 32" tall and about 25" wide. They slide quite well.

Thanks for the information. Does the glass come out easily for cleaning? Using the aluminum, both being the same height, I can't takethe glass out. Are the channels different heights?

The glass comes out very easily.

I should have said that I recommend spraying silicone lubricant onto the track before you put the glass in. I also use a dremel tool with a buffing attachment to smooth the glass and the inside of the track every now and then. I also reapply silicone spray when I do that.

The top part is deeper than the bottom part, if that's what you mean.

Here's a picture of the "tan" K&P product. You can see it's actually orange.

I think I found what you used. Is this it?

If not, see if you can find me a link to it. I have several nice cages "in the works" and I need to get the track ordered. I use all Vision and Precision Cages in my snake room, but I'm building some nice diplay cages for various animals. Again, thanks for all the help!

Yes, that's the stuff. I ordered via the website and received the black track. Dunno if it's random or if you have to do something special to get the color you want. I believe the upper and lower tracks are of different heights. The track is about as wide as a 3/4" sheet of melamine; maybe just a bit wider. If you need detailed pictures or measurements, let me know; I have some that I've just opened up but haven't installed yet.

Did you use tempered glass? The install guide said that one componet is not used when using tempered glass. What's the largest door you've built using this track? I'm planning a cage that will have doors using 2 2x2 sheets of tempered and just curious.

I have not used tempered glass with these tracks. The reason I've not done so is that I've heard that it is more difficult to get that super smooth edge required for running along the plastic.

The biggest doors I've used were about 32" tall and 25" wide. I know you can go quite a bit bigger. How much I do not know.

I can get the rounded edges, but it cost almost as much as the glass, but thinks for the info.

I checked 4 different Lowes and Home Depots... this track is not to be found. Best place to get them is that website sighted earlier in the post. Rockler.

Copy and paste this to the search and it will bring you right to the tracks, if that does not work just use this www.doitbest.com.
