Female or Male?

svinarsk Jan 14, 2004 01:44 PM

My ig has a series of dots on the bottom of his thighs leading upward towards his feet kindda. The dots almost look like little holes. But the dots make a pattern leading up in lines on both thighs neer the vent. Are these the femoral scales or whatever? I wish I had a picture but my digicam died. When I get more batteries I will post a pic. Any one have an idea?

how old is your iguana>? (what size?) if ur iguana is from 6-8 inches from snout to vent it is old enough to tell..............if the pores are little pinpoints when they are that old it is a female.....if the look like waxy pimple typoe things....lol...for lack of a better word then it is a male........let me know how it is going....oh yeah by the wya this is my new name- i used to be iguanaboy8705.

I guess since you have had your dying baby iguanas for a couple weeks now, that makes you and expert huh?

You cannot reliably tell if an iguana is male or female based on size of femoral pores until it has reached sexual maturity, usually at least 2 years of age. You certainly cannot tell if your iguana is as small as 6-8" StV. If you see femoral pores bigger than 2mm with large waxy secretions, and the head is starting to show jowling, it is most likely male, but even then you could be wrong. Tempest is somewhere between 3 1/2 and 4 yrs of age as close as my vet and I can tell, 2.6kg, just over 13" StV, and based on his body size, condition, and growth over the last year, and we *think* he's male... even my vet, who deals only with reptiles (there are other vets in the clinic for fur n feathers), is not willing to say male for sure, or female for sure, for another year or two. You could take your ig to a vet and get it palpated and probed, but its a nasty thing to do to your ig.
