Feeding problems

gewoondavid Jan 14, 2004 03:17 PM

My retic will not eat everytime I try to feed him.
I try to feed him twice a weak with a small rat.
Sometimes he won't eat a dead rat. Sometimes he eates only a live one, other times he won't eat at all!
What can be the problem and what can I do about it?
The temperature en the humidity is okay in the enclosure, so that can't be the problem.
Please help.
David

It's hard to say with how little info you left. How old is the retic? How big is it? What kind of cage do you have it in? Do you have a hide box for it? What size food are you feeding it? Have you tried feeding in the dark? If you answer these it would be easier to help. If its not eating don't try feeding so often, your retic is most likely just stressed out.

His cage is 1 x 0,75 x 0,75 m.
He has a hide box in his cage. He has spent his time there the last couple of days. He's about 1,2 mtr. long and I'm feeding him small rats. He's captive bred 2003. I always feed him in the dark, because during the day-time he's only agressive towards his preys, only biting them. I think you're right about beeing stressed, because I had to treat him for a minor burning wound that he had got at the breeders place.
I'll leave him alone for a week and try to feed him than.

I've had lots of luck warming the dead rat in a baggie placed in hot water for 15 minutes. Has made a huge difference sometimes.
