Hi Cory
I got my first gecko in 2000. I got my albino breeders from Ron Tremper in 2001. My male was the best he had available at that time, very high quality stock, sold to me as orange phase (this was before he called his orange geckos tangerine) het patternless, has also turned out to be hypo and about 15% CT on tail. What happened was my ex, after sayng he wanted to marry and buying a house together, decided he wanted to experience being single, offered to buy me any gecko I wanted for my b-day and I was pissed so I sought out the most expensive, gorgeous gecko I could find anywhere, and said, I want THIS one. Which he bought for me. I got a female to go with. My first year breeding was in 2002, I did not offer any geckos for sale that year. 2003 is my first year selling. In 2003 I had a stroke of luck, whereby a SHTCT I bred to my male turned out to be het albino, giving me a prime breeder for 2004, VIVID, and his genetic brother, who is pictured in the response to your post above.
So while what you see is the results of two years of selective breeding, however, I have only been breeding two years (just starting on year three), and so much of the credit for the genetic quality of my animals goes to Ron Tremper for providing excellent (though pricey) starter stock, though my decision to outcross to a SHTCT was in hindsight the smartest breeding decision I ever made.
I have been doing some outcrossing and selective breeding in my line (e.g. SHTCT bred in 2003), and expect to see fantastic results in 2004 from those efforts and my new breeder males.
I guess the moral of the story is, start with the best stock you can possibly afford, most especially your male, give your animals the best care and environment possible, and say your prayers- because luck can go a long way! I think I have been especially fortunate in my choices and in my luck and I am very thankful. Even my bad luck this year of too-hot incubator temps for part of the season turned out well for me, as it created my top new breeder males which would otherwise have been female (though you can bet this season I will make sure that doesn't happen again!).
Breeding is a LOT of fun and very exciting, but it also takes a lot of work and space ( I have a whole room full of just gex, plus they are in other rooms too). Make sure you have the time and space to spare before you take the plunge.
