SuperMario Jan 14, 2004 05:04 PM

Hi im new here and I had a res about 3 and a half inches not sure if its a male or a female yet I also have what looks to be a river cooter about 4 and a half to 5 inches long then a few days ago for my birthday I got a Eastern painted turtle hes about 5 to 5 and a half is it possible for my river cooter and painted turtle to mate what if he which is the painted turtle attempts to mate with my rive cooter (which is a girl Obviously). Also is there a chance I can have River Cooter? Painted Turtle babies lol I dont know anymore.

They can and will most certainly mate with eachother if they are opposite sexes. As to whether or not such a mating will work and produce a viable egg is questionable. Most likely not.

I have a Florida Cooter female and diamond back terrapin male. They mate constantly but even if the female were to lay eggs there is no way that such a mating would produce viable eggs.

What do u mean by viable they wont hatch?

honuman Jan 16, 2004 02:14 PM

Exactly. They may never develop or start to and just die before they develop very much.

mating is possible
courtship is likely
and mating itself is not out of the question
whteher the eggs becoem fertile is another issue
be sure you hae a large enough enclosure or tank fo rall thse new turtle and watch them carefully as they may be aggressive toward each other.
If you do see mating and the female is large enough you will need to provide a land area.

thnx alot for responding, big help for me. One question the what exactly will these babies look like even if they do hatch which is like a 50 50 chance are they be like half and half species or like half of the babies are painters and half are cooters. Because I mean theres not much of a huge diff between them also. My painted turtle that I got on January tenth for my birthday when I purchased it I noticed that it had some maybe 4 black dots on it back didnt look like they were permenent also on his back is shredded scales with tiny bit of air in the half peeled scales should i clean his back with somethin to help him through the process of shedding his skin or should i let him handle himself
