ESU Super UV light?

Tumtum03 Jan 14, 2004 06:33 PM

What do people think of these lights for dragons? I have a bulb and was wondering if that would be ok for the UVA and UVB requirements? I mean that would not be the main heat source just for the fluorescent. I have a powersun bulb for that! Let me know what people think of them? I also have a repti-sun 5.0 bulb, so I have the lights either way. Thanks!

I use one now in my new iguanas cage. Its a very large enclosure, and it's not being used for it's uvb output, but just for added light without the heat a regular bulb would put off. I had it sitting around so I figured I'd make use of it. Not sure on their UVB output, but they do claim it, and that is what the bulbs intentions were. To provide the beneficial UVB without the need for a long fluorescent fixture, just a regular dome fixture can be used. Just too new of a bulb for me in my opinion to use it solely as a uvb source yet. ESU has put out some real crappy fluorescent bulbs in the past claiming higher UVB output, and they put out very little when tested. Need to see a few more tests run on them and actually see how far the uvb gets thrown from the bulb, and exactly how much it gives off before I would use them regularly. I saw one test, but the numbers of supposed UVB being output was oddly very high for any fluorescent, so I'm not sure in that particular test it was not mistaken for a mercury vapor bulb. I would say great for a safety net for a uvb source cause I'm not sure of the output at what distance, and adding light intensity without much heat.

Hi Mattman:

Just wanted to say that we use the ESU Super Coil UV Lights and so far like them. They are ideal for our situations when we can not use the T Rex Mercury Vapor Bulbs we use on our 20 gallon tanks and larger because they are to large and to hot.

We use the ESU Super Coil UV on all of our ten gallon tanks with a Zoo Med basking bulb for heat. The babies we house in the ten gallons have been doing really good on them and then as they get bigger we move them up to the twenty gallon tanks where they get the exposure to the TRex Mercury Vapor Bulbs.

All of the ESU lights I have tested had very very low output past 6", almost to the point of worthless.
