care of uromastyx vs. leos?

cs Jan 14, 2004 06:40 PM

Hi guys, I've had a leo for a couple months and I was thinking of maybe getting a mali uro. I've heard good things about these guys, and i noticed that there are many people in this forum that have them. Could you guys tell me how hard/easy it is to care for these guys compared to leos, and also if they are generally more or less tame then leos?

Thanks

Well, uros are not very hard to care for except the fact that they need fresh greens daily, and a very high temp basking spot (120 -130).I've found that vision cages make this easy to aquire with a ceramic heat emiter. For the behavioral part, most mali's have a good disposition, although mine is an exception (like most of my critters) Maybe it's because he's still a baby, but he does the defensive hula everytime i try to pick him up, it's quite comical to see =) I've found that leo's are kinda jumpy and skittish or maybe that only goes for the ones that i have been in touch with. This is just my opinon, but i perfer Uro's over Leo's, they just seem to have more personality.

I depends what you are looking for in you captives as far as behaviors. I can tell you that Uro's can display some really cool behaviors if you keep them in such a way that they can express them. I have a trio of young Mali's that I'm raising up together in a 55 gallon right now. I have them on a soil mix that is just about a foot deep. Let me tell you...given the opportunity, these little guys dig tunnels and burrows that will baffle you. Very cool stuff. Head over to the Uro forum for more info on the subject.
