Perlite as a laying medium?

VTEC Jun 05, 2003 06:07 PM

I just got a big bag of perlite at walmart for 2 bucks. It is way more than I'll need but it was the smallest that they had and I only intend on using it to incubate eggs in. I looked for vermeculite because I hear most people use that as their laying medium. I am getting some vermec. with my incubator from lllreptile but I was thinking since I have so much perlite could I use that for laying or am I better off with vermeculite?

Thanks in advance.

In my opinion, it's way too abrasive to use as a laying medium.

Just a kind note - this question has been asked about 4 times in the past month. You might want to utilize the search function if you ever have any pressing questions.

I'm not telling you this as a slam - it's just that most people don't realize KS has a pretty cool search engine.

Take care

Mealworms . . . .you can't eat just one

Perlite is the little styrofoam balls, right? I'd be afraid of them eating it. I just use plain soil for laying boxes, then move the eggs to vermiculite to incubate. I'm not sure perlite would hold moisture as well as vermiculite.
