Hello,
I am looking for a good book on making vivariums, growing and breeding dart frogs, fruit fly cultures, and a list of dart frog species, also lots of pics if possible

TIA

I, and many others, would say that Jerry G. Walls' book "Jewels of the Rainforest" is absolute must. It has more a wealth of pictures and information about the hobby.

Jewels of the Rainforest is a must have for any dart frogger.

I will agree with Radny that Jewels is a great book, some of the info if wrong, but well worth the price in pictures alone.
Two other great books are:
"Poison-Arrow Frogs, Their Natural History and Care in Captivity" by Ralf Heselhaus ISBN# 0-7137-2257-6
and
"Poison Dart Frogs" by William Samples and Jack Wattley
ISBN# 0-7938-3013-3

Others are out there, but these are great to start with.

Pictures aside, I'd say that all books in English pertaining to Dendrobatids contain obsolete information, while some of it is still useful.

There is a wealth of knowledge for you to research on the internet. A couple of my favorite pages are www.poison-frogs.nl, www.frogworld.nl and www.azdr.com. Greg at www.azdr.com has a great explanation of how to set up a simple 10 gallon false bottom starter vivarium. Join frognet (www.frognet.org) and utilize this forum to ask questions. There are many differing opinions on husbandry of these animals. Do not let that confuse you. To begin, I believe the simpler the better. Make sure that you research as much as you can. Honestly, though, I do not think any of the books would help you. I've found that generic rainforest photo books are great material for vivarium set up ideas.

My opinions.

This is a great book... it has enough working info on dart frog husbandry... and good info on a variety of other species. If you are a frog nut like I am, it is a good book to add to your library if you are interested in other anurans as well. Think of it like a sears catalogue... it helps you to plan frog purchases for the future It is fairly inexpensive as well, it should be around 10 dollars.. and has a lot of meaty information. It is the best bang for your buck... a much better deal than Jewels of the Rainforest. Jewels has some great photos, but the info is just too out of date. I have another book on Darts by Jerry Walls, and it is just so outdated it isn't worth the money if you are just getting into darts. Stick to the Dick Bartlett book, and that will be enough to get you by for the first while. Apparently, Heselhaus is putting out another book in the near future which should be awesome... I think I heard this on frognet... but I can't remember for sure... so don't quote me just yet.
Good luck.
