Wild Bull snake...

troyez70 Jan 14, 2004 09:04 PM

I posted earlier today and asked about my wild bullsnake not eating. You all told me to "cool him down," ok, what is the right temp for a hibernating bullsnake?

brought him back to IL and set him up in a large enclosure (36 x 36 x 24) with a uv lamp, heat rock, water dish, attached hide box, etc. He was eating thawed adult mice for the first month and a half, but stopped eating several weeks ago. all the time, .

Hey there!

He may want to hibernate, but if I were you, I would maybe change a few things. Take out the heat rock and the uv light may be a bit too much as well. I say this cause really high cage temps can cause pits to regurge or not eat. Do you know the temp in his cage? Try to have the temp at 78 to 82 at the most. In my experience, this has worked best. If the temp was too high, that may have caused him not to eat. If the uv light doesn't provide too much heat, that is fine.

If that is not it, I guess he may want to hibernate. Slowly cool him down to 55-60 perhaps. You may have to move his cage to the coldest part of your house. I currently have an adult pine in hibernation in a closet, which works fine.

Hope this helps and keep us posted!

Slowly cool him down over a week or two. Shoot for a temp between 50-60 degrees for 2-3 months if you can.
