Cheap terrarium Plants

bgexotics Jan 14, 2004 09:49 PM

I was in Lowe's picking up vermiculite for my leopard gecko eggs and found hundreds of fresh terrarium plants for $2. these wern't the half dead clearance ones either. I bought like 12 of them. Usually I wait fot hem to dry out the broleliads and orchids and buy them for $3. I have gotton ones for that price that had offshoots already. They even had tropical ferns. I bought Cryptocanthus bivittatus, Peperomia caperata, Sanservia trifasciata, pothos, arrowhead plants, and a few other bog plants. I usually repot them in a terrarium mixture and spagnum moss depending on the plant. I know that Lowe's and other large stores use an abundance of pesticides, so I wait several weeks before using them in my frog tanks. There is no place to buy terrarium plant swhere I live. It seems like Lowe's is starting to get a pretty good selection. Tomorrow I am going back when they get orchids and bromeliads in. I have more plants than frogs now in my reptile room.

Home Depot is another good place to buy tropical houseplants that work well in the viv. I bought a peperomia in a 4" pot for $1.79.

If you have Fred Meyer in your area, they usually have a good selection of tropicals in 2" pots for $0.99. I bought a carnivorous Nepenthes alata there and it turned out to be two plants that I separated and planted in different areas of the viv. Both are doing very well and starting to produce pitchers. I also got a really neat climing plant that looks something like pothos, but has more heart shaped leaves. I'm not sure what it is, but it sure seems to be taking off.

The only drawback to buying at these places is that the plants are often labled only as 'tropical houseplant' with no clue about what they are exactly.

The plants I bought at Lowe's actully had the full latin name. They were the Angel plant brand. I finally planted my 10 gallon mantella tanks and they turned out really nice.

We were at Lowe's ourselves last weekend, and found a ton of GREAT plants as well as long fibered spaghnum moss for CHEAP! Actually Lowes carries "Exotic Angel" plants that are really good when it comes to latin names of plants! Then after we had already picked out a few plants, we came across their carnivorous plants section, and found a Nepenthes, anda Sundew for 3 bucks! Can't beat that!! I also found the charcoal on clearance that Homer spoke of a few days back! We even started talking to the "Plant Lady", she took one of our cards, and told us she'd call everytime a new shipment came in! Talk about customer service!!
