Brown stuff on shell

stars2 Jan 14, 2004 09:59 PM

I have 2 RES and today I noticed they have a brown powder on their shell. If i use my nail I can get some of it to come off. Does anyone know what this is? Also one of their shells is soft around the edge. When you apply presser it bends down. They have a UVA/UVB light, as well as a heat lamp for their basking area. Their water temperature is around 82. I have been coating their food with a calcium powder thinking it would help the shell but it still seems bad. Their diet is mainly crickets, a few veggies,a few feeder fish once in a while, and sometimes pellets. Does anyone have any suggestions? Im new at being a turtle owenr...Thanks.

If your turtles are small then it's natural to have softer, more flexible shells than adults. Remember that the carapace is also part of their body and scratching and bending the carapace may hurt them! I'm not sure what the brown stuff is though. Could it be new shell growth that looks like dark bands around the perimeter of the scutes?!
