Freezing cold and killing mites

homeslice Jan 15, 2004 12:41 AM

Simple question.
My 13 ft burmese has mites in her cage and on her. The cage is about 5 length by 3 height and 3 width. Im looking at making it 7x3x3. Now i live in NE United States and theres 4 inches of snow outside and its about 5 degrees farhenheit. If i disassemble my cage, store my snake in a temporary room for like 2 days with a big heater after thoroughly cleaning and batheing in a water betadine solution, can i place my dissasembled plywood cage outside in my yard in the negative weather to kill the mites and their eggs?

If not, what would be the best way to rid the plywood of these god dammed mites permanantly?
If so, how long should i stick it outside? And what would some other suggestions be?

The mites lay eggs which hatch later. And you can't very well disassemble the cage and drag it outside every time the mites reappear. Besides, you may be sure that they are elsewhere in the room where the cage is located.

Buy a can of Provent-a-mite and follow the directions on the label.

P.S. I have a helpful document written by an experienced herp veterinarian surveying various mite treatments (both recommended and not recommended). I'd be happy to send it to anyone who emails me.

From what i seem to understand all pro products seem to be at the top of their class and the guy who answers the phone there is really nice.

Id be interested to see that paper joan since the 3 mite prevention products purchased by myself seem to suck.
My emails mjkelly93@yahoo.com if you could send it over if you get a chance id really appreciate it.
Thanks a bunch

I WAS KINDA WONDERING THE SAME... I BOUGHT A BURM BACK IN OCTIBER & SHE ENDED UP HAVING MITES... I HAD A NICE SETUP IN HER ENCLOSURE, GOT RID OF AL THE MITES & HAVE SINCE THEN LEFT THE WOOD FROM HER OLD ENCLOSURE OUTSIDE IN THE SUB-ZERO WEATHER... IT HAS NOW BEEN SINCE OCTOBER, W/SNOW & BELOW ZERO WEATHER-SO I THINK/KNOW ALL THE MITES ARE GONE BUT I AM STILL HESETANT TO PUT THE WOOD BACK IN THE TANK....
