Giant pyxie tank setup??

squib Jan 15, 2004 01:35 AM

What is the best terrarium setup for a giant pyxie frog? does anyone have diagrams or pictures please post. I want to have the best most efficant tank setup all ready before I purchase a pyxie. I'm thinking of buying a 40 gal or more tank.

50 gallon or larger tank. Bed a beast as substrate on land side. 2/3 land, 1/3 water. Plexiglass divider. Temps of 75-85. Hiding spots like plants. 4-6 inches of substrate for burrowing. Well filtrated water. You can ask if you need anything else or just email me.

How damp should the bed-a-beast be? Will the pyxie hybernate in it if it's dry? What plants grow in bed-a-beast? Do they like cork bark log hollows? And what humidity do they prefer? Sorry for all the questions but I like to have everything squared away.

How damp should the bed-a-beast be?
Dry on top and damp on the bottom should work. Make sure it is not saturated, but is not so dry that it is dusty.

Will the pyxie hybernate in it if it's dry?
If you allow the frog to dry up enough, it will brumate in the bed a beast.

What plants grow in bed-a-beast?
Pothos ivy works great as long as you rinse it and leave it in fertilizer free soil under a window for a month or so to get the chemicals out of its system.

Do they like cork bark log hollows?
Doubtful. They will spend most of their time buried under the soil anyway.

And what humidity do they prefer?
Probably 30-50%. That is what mine have always been kept at without problems.

Sorry for all the questions but I like to have everything squared away.
No worries...That is what the board is here for. Good luck

I guess it is up to how you wish to keep them.
But in the wild the males and fems come outta the ground to breed
(1 time a year) Approx 2 months.
Well then they breed and the male stays around to take care of the young ones, probably because larger size he can make larger pools for the young to live in since the drought is soon coming.
They are very sedentary for a month to make sure the little frogs have a chance, then burrow down for 9 months....till next rain.
The 2 zoos that I have worked, and ones that I have seen around the US have all keep a dirt setup for 8 months, (with peat) and then went a totaly aqautic setup for the rest of the year, trying to simulate thier envioment. But I have senn some that are totaly aqautic all yr round, and lived healthy.
The tanks that they use are a custom 35 flat.
These frogs do not move a whole lot, thats why they ambush thier pray.

Most don't move because they are so fat that they have no reason to move...All their food is dropped onto them. A fair amount of pyxies tend to explore their enclosures. The true pyxie and dwarf I had tended to relocate to new spots one or two times a day, wander around for a while to check out the surroundings, and soak for a few hours and the case is the same for some others I know that have Pyxicephalus. They will utilize all the area if given. The standard that most people tend to use is 55 gallons for adult males and 35 gallons for adult females (due to the massive size difference). Andy
