Ventiliation in Sterilite/Rubbermaid containers

roachey56 Jan 15, 2004 05:48 AM

I just made about 60 1/4 inch holes in the sides. The holes are about 2.5 inches off bottom and covered with mesh. Is that enough Ventilation? or should i make more holes?

is that only on one side? If so go all the way around. I have both my bp's in rubbermaid like containers (4ft long each). I did a kind of zip zag going across, one up, one down, one up, one down.
You don't have to cover it with mesh unless the holes are big enough for the snake to get out. If it's really close to the bottom then I think it loses humidity more??? not sure on that one though. I Can't remember

This is for a ball python right? How big is the container? what kind of heating do you use?

I put ike 10. Sometimes NONE!! But 60? You might as well just have a screen cage! LOL!

You do know that the lids aren't air-tight, right?

The total area i took out of the sides is: 2.94375 square inches. Is that to much taken out? and that is assuming all the circles are exactley 1/4 of an inch and i am sure all of them are not 1/4 of an inch.

Hmmm....not sure. I just poke like 10 or so holes in the cold end only. The holes are small. Just made with a small soldering iron. Ball Pythons don't need a ton of ventilation. They don't respire like you or I do, coupled with the fact that they are somewhat fossorial (for lack of a better word) by nature. Too much ventilation, and you'll defeat the purpose of using a Rubbermaid in the first place!

Remember, a picture is worth a 1000 words!!

I use about 60/80? who counts.........I just drill a whole bunch in all 4 sides.......

I heat the whole room and do not use heat tapes........

I use the holes to ventilate...or mold grows really fast on paper(any dampness at all)........(soybean oil ink)........

......whole room is humid and warm......

yep.....60 is ok ........

i got 45 holes in mine. 60% humidity. 88 degrees hotspot

It probably does make a difference how you heat your snakes and the humidity in the room (depending on where you live).

My background basement temp is pretty low so I have to apply a lot of heat with heat tape and I notice that particularly with the under tank racks they tend to dry out with only a moderate number of holes. I also live in the west and it's very dry so I find myself taping over holes on tubs where I got carried away and sometimes even spraying tubs down. I suppose it's probably a completely different situation with a hot humid room.
