Tropic-Aire Humidifier & Air Exchanger product for an acquarium?

BallHeaded Jan 15, 2004 11:34 AM

Hi,

I read a post about this product. I'm having a horrible time keeping humidity up and I read on the board that someone had success with this product.

I currently have a 29 gallon tank with a screen lid and a heat lamp that's lying face down on top of the screen. I'm not sure if anyone uses this humidifying product with a similiar configuration to my setup but if you do, how is it working out for you?

Did you cut out a towel or something comparable to lay over the screen with a hole large enough to lay your heat lamp through face down?

thanks in advance!

I have used the Tropic air thing and personally I thought it didn't do much good. Even in a closed environment, it didn't work all that well.

Works great for me!

Are you using a UTH in addition to the light? The light could be drying your air out affecting humidity. I think belly heat (from a UTH) is better than overhead heat.

Anyway, I covered my screen with duct tape with space left for my light (I have to use an infrared on my cool side to keep those temps in range). I recommend buying an air pump rated for a larger tank than what you have.

I've also heard good things about using the Repti-Flo.

I love this product! I also had trouble keeping up humidity levels and it resulted in my ball python going through a bad shed So i purchased the tropic-aire humidifier & air exchange and since then- perfect humidity! the only thing is... this product increases the humidity in all parts of the tank, what you really want is a higher humidity in the warm hide over the undertank heater. So what I've done to create a sort of "humidity regulation" is pull the tubing through a hole in the back of my hiding cave on the warm end and then cut the rigid tubing that releases the humid air so that only 2 holes dispense the humid air (compared with 3). I do this just to make the rigid tube fit in my hiding cave (so it's not sticking out). I have found this technique to work great for my BP and he can move to his hide in the cooler end if he wants less humidity or move to the warm humid end

I've never heard anything about wanting the humidity to be different on the 2 sides. I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think that's correct. Hopefully someone else will chime in and shed some light on this. I really don't see why you would want the humidity different on the 2 sides. You want a temperature gradient - not a humidity gradient.

I'm so glad you guys were able to make the product work for you. 50% is still good. Just when it's shed time maybe add some daily mistings to increase it further - or cover the tank with damp towels.

Here's hoping for good future sheds!

The humidifier is replacing the damp moss you would otherwise place in the hide to increase the humididy. If you did that you would get the same results - a higher humididty in the hide vs. elsewhere in the tank. My setup still maintains approx 60% humidity throughout the tank, it's just higher in the cave which is especially good when my BP goes through a shed.

My BP won't use a humid hide - so it didn't do me any good. Yes, generally a humid hide is only located in one spot of the entire tank - but that does not mean that you should only have high humidity in one spot in the tank and a different percentage in the rest of the tank. It's fine to be the same throughout. I love this product too.

Hi guys,

Just to give you a heads up!

I purchased the product for my 29-gallon screen covered aquarium and let it run all night. I am quite happy with the results! Before I started, my humidity was slightly below 30 and I'd mist several times a day. I covered half my screen with a drying towel to keep in humidity but that didn't work at all for me.

I purchased the Tropic-Aire product with a 40-gallon air pump (advised by some to go larger than your tank size) and covered my screen with shower curtain material. (NOTE: If you buy this product AND a pump, check to see if the pump has one or two plugs. If it has two plugs, buy the 'T shaped' adaptor piece that connects one tube to two plugs!!!) Since I'm using a lamp that lays right on top of the screen, I had to cut a whole in the shower curtain for the lamp. I taped the sides of the shower curtain to the screen in order to keep in the humidity. I knew I would lose some humidity but that's OK since I had no choice but to cut a hole in the shower curtain for my lamp.

The humidity is now at 50 and I'm very happy. Wish it were more but 50 has me smiling nonetheless, especially since it was below 30 beforehand. The temp on the cool side has been steady at 85.

I'm going to go play with my balls now

Thanks again for the original post about the product!!

My humidity is now hovering in the 60 area and I'm VERY, VERY, VERY happy! No more "squirt, squirt" from the water bottle and worrying about RI issues because the humidity collapses under 30 when the "squirt, squirt" wears off

Highly recommended!
