switching adult rat breeders

weiside Jan 15, 2004 12:22 PM

How often do I do this? I have about 20 adult rats that are breeding for me right now, but I don't know how old they are. Should I be keeping the female rat babies right now for future breeding? Or should I not be worrying about keeping moms in their prime breeding ages for now.

As long as things are going well, I wouldn't bother. When the older females start to slow down, then I'd start a new group. So keep track of litter sizes and watch to see how healthy the pups are. You'll see when it's time. Some folks have hard and fast rules about retiring breeders at a certain age, but sometimes moms will just keep pumping them out, so why not take advantage.
