Sources of Light for Reptiles- UVA vs UVB

oceanwalker Jan 15, 2004 12:33 PM

Hi,

I found a web site that explains the types of light needed for reptiles. I assume this applies for my RES. Some good information found here, and explains the differences between UVA, UVB, Natural and Artificial Lighting. This has been a big help to me. Now I am going to purchase a UVB bulb for my RES!

Here is the website, fyi:

Hope this is helpful!!

Although I believe Aquatic turtles need UVB, just a word of caution. Dont base your needs on information from a site that sells what they tell you you need.

I looked at that site and it provides some vague info. It says your "REPTILE" needs UVB. Not all reptiles need UVB, but petsmart sure would like you to buy their products to provide it for them.

It also says that incandescent bulbs provide heat but no UV and fluorescents provide UV but little heat. They dont mention Mercury Vapor bulbs which provide both.
