What are you going to be keeping in the cage?

Not positive yet but either a uromastyx or a bts.Not anything that requires high humidity.
You could use plywood and stain it and then seal it,just make sure you let it air out so there isnt any fumes left in there.Or you can use melamine or laminated pine,I like melamine but I havent used any of the other ones yet.The only problem with melamine is that it is kinda heavy. With melamine or laminated pine you can get it pre-cut in sheets of 4`,6`,or 8`long by 2`wide so it makes it faster to put together.Just make sure you pre-drill the holes.I use plexiglass for my bearded dragons cage and he hasnt scratched it up yet.How do you plan to heat the tank?

Well that would depend on what I get.I will probably just end up using a basking bulb or 2.
Glass. don't bother with plexi/acrylic. it warps too easily in heat. Lexan maybe, but its so expensive that glass will be cheaper probably.

If you want something that looks like wood, build with plywood.
If you want to paint your cage a specific color, use MDO.
If you don't want to worry about finishing, use melamine.
