Here is one of my 150gal. set-ups. The 2 below it are 20gal. long isolation tanks (just in case). I'm using a 50% EastTexas dirt & 50% Playsand. 2 100watt basking bulbs at either end and a undertank heater as well. This particular tank houses to adult Ornates (1.1). I'm not entirely happy with my substrate mix however, it dries out to much causing a "Dust Bowl". Let me know what you think. I'm open for suggestions!

I like it -- if i was to try and get a mali (or 2?) or a ornate. ... . how much room do i need? is a 4Lx2Hx2D good enough?
If so - how about for two?
I have my single mali in a 40-gallon breeder tank. The blanket on top of the tank helps keep the heat in better when the outside temp fluctuates (there's been a cold snap the entire week). I have him on playsand substrate right now but I will eventually upgrade to a dirt substrate with a top sand layer (just like someone, I can't remember who exactly, on this site did) once the dirt outside thaws and I can find some free stuff (don't want to get in trouble with the police for digging on private property)
I'll also upgrade to a bigger tank once I get enough money.

Your dimensions would be o.k. for one. Two adults (depending on which subspieces) would be cramped. Always,Always,Always go with as much room as your limits will allow for. Even in my 150gal. tanks, they still could use more room. Unfortunetly, 3-150's, 1-100,and numerous other tanks are all squeezed into our master bedroom. (Wife threatening "Bunkbeds"!)

I'd buy a bigger tank first, then buy another uro. I live in an apartment so space is limited. When I upgrade to a house, I hope to have a "reptile room". I'm currently checking out prices of bigger tanks at reptile shows (they seem cheaper) and I'll buy one once finances allow. I don't think Ra minds being by himself at the moment anyway

that is what i refer to when talking about ventilation. you need to minimize it, not maximize it
for that glass tank, i may set it up so that it has 2 or 3 square INCHES of venting, period! the rest cover with towels, foil, plastic, whatever (perhaps a different solid lid altogether), but right now you have just built a dehydrator, and that is working against you, your animal, and your soil.
on the monitor forum, they call that a beef jerky machine, and your Uro ends up being the beef jerky, and that is not healthy or desirable.
you will get plenty of fresh air exchange through a hole 1x3 inches, and your temps will be MUCH easier to control, as will your soil, and overall humidity.
best of luck

I get it. But what should be done to ADD moisture back into the environment?

add some water
we had about a half gallon or so each week to our 4 ft troughs (2 ft deep soil) to keep it where we want it...

Here is a picture of a few of my cages. These are all glass, sliding fronts and an option for a half glass/half screen top or all screen top. I have made some changes since starting to use these with basking spots and tiles, but they seem to work well, are easy to clean and have easy access.

Since I don't know how to post multiple pics, I have to post twice. DUH I also have some of these wood cages for my uros and ackies. They stay very warm but since they have a drop down door are a little harder to clean, but still quite nice.

Hey where did you get that shelf that you were using for your tanks in the previous picture? How much did it cost?I was thinking about trying to find something like that.
The shelf came from Sam's club. It is stainless, has four shelves that you can put wherever you want and has wheels that can be locked in place. It is 48" long. It was $69.99 plus tax. I really like it, it works great and I use the top shelf for my rubbermaid storage buckets with all my extra equipment.

I've got the same shelving unit, bought it at Home Depot (good for all your reptile needs)

thanks I was looking around for some shelves to put my three tanks on so I can look at them all at the same time and not have to run around my room.
