Reminder!! trichomonas is going around..... we are dealing with it now too

CheriS Jan 15, 2004 08:13 PM

I posted a week or so ago about outbreaks of trichomonas ( a flagellet) in bearded dragons that we were seeing on the medical forums and other post.

I talked to the Department of Agriculture they are seeing an increase in the outbreak of them in many mammals also and think it may be due to the long warm weather and heavy rains this fall. It creates a run off fo water from cattle lands into produce agriculture lands.

I just got back from the vet with a 5 month old that stopped eating monday and started hiding...... very strange for my babies, they usually are very active and bottomless pits!!! Sure enough, he is loaded with Trichomonas, so I have five I am treating that we know was in contact with him and I am going to have other tanks tested that have not had contact with him....... they are all eating the same salads, crickets and supers. So if the source it there, chances all our have them...We know they were all clear 2 months ago.

This is also popping up in colonies that only fed salads and rep-Cal pellets, so we tend to think it is the greens, don't know for sure, but it seems to point that way.

Flagyl is the medication most often used to try and clear this, but we are also hearing that the one does and two weeks later dose does not seem to be clearing them and a more frequent dose is needed. Discuss it with your Vet and PLEASE, if you dragon is slowing down, get it checked... even if you think it may be brumation, get a fecal float and direct done to rule out a problem that can jeopardize their health.

this has happened to us and many others within the last 2 month, most likely the past few weeks.

Only one dragon seems ill, and he just started this week, but if it is in the food source, any of them awake right now can have it since they all eat the same salads.

We also thought of something else, our county two weeks ago was warning everyone to boil the water for the next 72 hours, before drinking or cooking as they had detected bacteria in it and it would take that long to clear it in the public water... from what I understand utilities are aware of the problem and watching public water supplies.

Well, we did and we used bottled water for the dragons drinking water, misting water and pellets but I only heard it that night after I had bathed all the dragons and let them drink their fill in their water So it could be coming from that also... I feel so stupid too as I noticed the water was slightly yellow tint that night

Just stinks to have one sick and know the others could be too.... thankfully it is very treatable and the dragons that have been around that one we treated tonight also. I will have them all checked within the next week, but at this time, only one is showing any signs of illness.
