Back in September I was looking to expand my family. My only herp was my beardie. I was looking to get just one gecko, so I bought a ten gallon, set everything up well, and looked around for leos that needed to be adopted, since I can't see the logic in buying a leo from a breeder when there are leos looking for adoption... So I looked around and found Scales n' Tails (scalesandtails.org), a New Jersey herp/ferret shelter. They had one male leo looking for adoption. I emailed them and asked if they'd ship... However, the person who handed them over said they didn't want them to be shipped. A little while later, though, Diane and Gail, who run the shelter, told me that they did have two sisters who were looking for a home that they'd ship. I inquired into their history, and they were taken from a pet store. One had the full original tail (Chomps), the other had a tail that was regenerating (Vienna). I didn't want to seperate them, since they got along very well from what I heard, so I adopted them both, and set up a new 20gal long enclosure. I paid for shipping, and then they came. It was a warm day, and they were suppoused to arrive that Thursday, and it was Wenesday. I had some other things coming in, so I took a box for me on the steps in... I opened it up, expecting it to be some headphones off of eBay, but to my suprise there they were. I quickly brought them upstairs (The heat packs were still warm, and it was in the high 60's outside, but I was still nervous for no real reason) and put them right in. Chomps got her name then, because she was really stressed out and bit me. It didn't hurt, it felt as if someone lightly squeezed my finger. She immediately let go, too. Vienna just got her name because, well, I liked the name. So... Thats their story I guess. Link below goes to Scales and Tails.

I love to hear about people's stories and their geckos... we all have a story (in some peoples' cases, they have MANY stories), and all the tales are different.

Whenever I have some extra cash, I think I will start donating to this shelter... I've heard quite a bit about it on this forum, and I do think it's a great thing they are doing.... obviously they did right by you and your geckos!!! They are beautiful!!!

Wished the shelter shipped, I would pick up their female iguana in a heartbeat... then again, maybe I will wait until I finally have that BA degree on the wall and pick up an iguana then as a present to myself!!!

Good luck with your critters, and keep us all posted. I love to read about updates.

Where do you live? I know here in Michigan of a reptile shelter run by a couple of great ladies that always have iguanas looking for great homes.
Actually, I think most areas would have a shelter within driving distance with iguanas looking for responsible folks to give them a home. They're the "disposable" reptile pet, it's such a shame...
Oh, and loved reading about Chomps and Vienna - great story and geckos!

I am currently living in Austin, TX - although I hope this is a transitory spot for me!!

Once college is finally over with - I imagine I'll be moving somewhere that's a little colder with a few more microbreweries close by!!!

Does anyone know of some websites off-hand that I could search - looking for a local (and by local - here in Texas, I mean within a three hour driving distance!!!) reptile related shelter???

I seriously would love to have a FEMALE iguana - I have the room and the heart...
