Skin problem on Spotteds

Tink737 Jan 15, 2004 10:11 PM

I have a few hatchling spotted turtles in a 65 gallon rubbermade tub containing enough water to provide about a 3 inch depth. There is a fluval filter and the water parameters are perfect. A basking area is provided as well. All are feeding well on a variety of foods. The other day I niticed the back feet of two of them is turning white. Fungus perhaps or some other problem? If anyone has any ideas, please let me know of a possible treatment. This does not appear to be any type of shedding. I'll probably take them to a vet on my next day off of work. Thanks, in advance, for any comments or suggestions.

Fungus is generally white or pale yellow in color, very superficial and rubs off very easily. Juveniles are more subsceptible. If it is fungus, use Fungus Cure (Marine Pharmeceuticals) which is available at most fish dealers. Use as directed for fish. You may supplement this treatment by leaving them out of water for several hours each day to dry the lesions and painting the affected area with Betadine SOLUTION (cheaper generic is iodine-povidone solution), then returning them to the water before they dehydrate. Recovery rate is very high with this treatment. Have had great success over many years with this treatment.
