Picking out hets from non-hets

ghostwolf Jan 16, 2004 01:23 AM

I know that in animals such as boa constrictors and burms, there are experienced breeders who have developed their own methods of determining the likely true hets in a group of possibles. I am wondering if this occurs in leos as well. For you experienced breeders out there...Do you think there are any tell-tale signs of a het vs. non-het? For example, in a group of patternless possible het for albino or a group of albinos possible het for blizzard. Are there any color/pattern differences you have noticed between hets and non-hets? Even in the boas and burms I mentioned earlier, this is all pure speculation. There are no proven methods to determine a heterozygous trait in an animal. I just thought it would be interesting to hear any thoughts and/or theories.

so far no, not that i have seen however, some blizzard hets seem to have a very distinct speckled pattern to them..... now i have seen alot that look like this but not all of them
so on a whole i would say no but in like the blizzards some hets do stand out its just not 100% though

From what i learned in biology, the only way to tell is breed them to a proven het. But since breeding is a seasonal thing with leos, it could take years just to find out who is het for what.

Yes, I know the only way to scientifically prove a het is to breed it out...But I am curious about any special characteristics the breeders have noticed with hets. Like I said, this is all for fun and merely speculation, but could have some basis on determining hets.
