Egg laying in hibernation

peterUK Jan 16, 2004 08:03 AM

I have a '99 Western Hognose in hibernation since Dec 1st, today while changing the water I noticed that she had shed her skin and also had laid one egg. She has NEVER been in with a male, this will be the first year for breeding.
How unusual is this to happen ? Could anyone shed any light on this for me ?
Thanks
Peter

Don't get offended if you think this is a stupid question, but could it be urates?

Have you been the only owner of this snake? How long have you had it? Are you sure it’s a fertile egg? Hognose snakes are known to store sperm, so if a couple years ago it was with a male, it could have stored the sperm.

This was definatly an egg NOT urates.

I have had this female since a hatchling and she has NEVER been in with a male.

As for the egg being fertile, By the condition of the egg it was laid shortly after the last water change ( 7 days ) and was dried up and going moldy so it was hard to tell but I would say it was NOT fertile going by the colour. I have felt her up thoughly and there are no more egg inside of her that i could feel. This is a real puzzle !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks

she could have eaten the other eggs if there were any others. one of my females that has been out of hybernation for a month but was only with a male a few weeks ago just layed 10 infurtile eggs. so sometimes you just need to get that male in with her sooner .

First year breeding hogs. Both are still in brumation, what are your suggestions for knowing when the female is ovulating? (such as post brumation shed etc.) Should the male and the female be brumated together? Any input would be much appreciated.
