Sav, Water, and Nile Pic request... Making a report on the more common Varanus in the Pet trade

Millionpoundbomb Jan 16, 2004 09:09 AM

Hey all,

I am going to create a report on the natural history and conservation of V. exanthematicus, V. niloticus, and V. Salvator

It will have more things about their conservation rather than care. I want to talk about the mass importation of monitors and the skin trade to be exact. Alittle of the document will also focus on the responsibility of owning a monitor.

I needed pics of each species. I wanted the pcitures to display the beauty of the animals. Pretty much the report will say, These animals demand respect, can seriously injure you, but with proper care they can be some of the most rewarding things to share your life with!

Anyway, Thanks in advance.

Check out my photo gallery under jcmonitor for some great pics of a water and ornate nile. They are a little big, sorry still working on the resizing but you are more than welcome to use them in your paper. Ps. Some great ones of my friendly ornate nile being held and sleeping... now those can be impressive.
Soprry I don't have any pics of my savs right now as I am attempting to breed them

You probably would know this already but it never hurts to write it anyway....

CITES can help you pretty much in getting the figures on the export on live and dead animals... ON their site the quota's are mentioned per year per region per species.....
TRAFFIC has detail reports on illegal skin trade and other trades in wildlife.. They are the watch dogs of the WWF and IUCN and UN.
And the US Fish and Wildlife Services have detailed information on what is traded in the US and stuff...

hope i have helped a bit...

Hello Starkey,

Good project. The resources you will need depends on how much in-depth material you can find and are willing to to that extent of depth to see that what is really detrimental to these Varanus is 1) habitat loss; 2) skin-trade losses, and 3) bush-meat, and 4) pet trade.

The sources you should review are:

V. salvator:

Luxmore, R. and B. Groombridge. 1989. Asian Water Monitors. IUCN.
199p.

V. exanthematicus & V. niloticus:

Buffrenil, V.de. 1991. Donnees bibliographiques et statistiques sur la biologie et l'exploitation des varans africains (V.e. et
V.n.). July. Convention commerce Int'l. species of fauna and flora. p1-37.

_____. 1991. Etude des varans du nil de la republique du Tchad.
June. Convention commerce Int'l. species of fauna and flora. 28p.

These sources are just the beginning, and there is as you will find a tremendous amount of material of the afore-mentioned. So it depends on your interest, how deep into the material you wish to go and #1: do you already have an answer, or better yet, are you going to have a question and answer depending on what your information tells you??

I know Dr. Vivian de Buffrenil and Richard Luxmore and Brian Groombridge and others, so email me if you have any other questions. But first I would go find these reports (probably at a University BioScience library) and begin there...

Cheers, Good Hunting!
