A question for cv768......long......

Paris6542 Jan 16, 2004 11:19 AM

Hey, you sound like you know what you are talking about so i have a question for ya'. You replied a while back to my question about my water dragon with nose rub. I have now moved him back into his reptarium so he can not hurt himself by running into the hard walls.
He went back to the vet a couple of days ago, because he broke his jaw in one of his frantic "freak out" moments. She told me that he suffers from anxiety problems and bad eyesight, and that surgery is the main option so that his exposed, broken jawbone will not die and so that his receeding flesh can be put back into place. I swear that i need to put him in a padded room so that he wont hurt himself anymore. He seems to have calmed down though ever since he has been back in his old house.

He is currently getting .04 of baytril and 1 cc of pedialite (unflavored) which i am injecting into his food. He still will not eat on his own however, i have to get him mad to where he will open up his mouth at me and then stick the food item into his mouth (it's a very slow, careful procedure, with his broken jaw and all)

What my main questions for you are (now that you know the situation), Is surgery the right thing, or will it freak him out even more? and, should topical antibiotic be applied (like neosporin)? Last but not least, am I doing the right thing?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you
-Amanda-

First, as long as your vet knows reptiles and has experiance with them...I would trust what she/he says...also usually when giving medication I like to force-feed the animal (althought this can be very stressful)...but at least then I know they are recieving the medication...otherwise if they don't eat the food they may not get the needed doasge and could make problems worse...and polysporin/neosprin are fine for treating wounds with reptiles...

Good luck.
