hibernation is done...another question

boastud Jan 16, 2004 12:20 PM

My dragons are up from hibernation eating like crazy, and the male is bobing his head like crazy, and chasing the girls. My question is, i haven't seen him breed just bob his head and run after them. I hear stories about how the moment you put the female in he breeds like crazy. Help

I'm assuming you don't want to deal with over a hundred babies, so... Seperate them. Males should not be with females.

That doesn't answer my question.

you shouldn't keep anything but females together all the time. A female and male combination should only be together for a short time in the year when you want them to breed. Otherwise the male is just going to breed the females every chance he gets and you're going to have hundreds of babies to take care or.

I just explained what the other post said. It was pretty clear to me.

I "temporarily" have the male in with the girls. They are in a 78"x41X22 cage. There hasn't been any breeding, that is what i was posting about.

I take it you do want them to breed.

Though I am no expert on breeding bearded dragons, it doesn't always happen instantly. It could take a few weeks or more till the females are ready to be bred by the male. If he has never bred before it may take him awhile to do it right. It is also possible your females just don't like him.

Only real thing you can do is make sure your females are healthy, at least 300g in weight (more is better) and have clean bills of health. Checking fecals of all females and the male would be a good thing as well, to make sure they don't have anything that could hamper their ability to reproduce.

I hope you are fully prepared for the responsibility of breeding your females. It takes alot out of them and out of your pocket book.

Sometimes it takes a while for the females to "warm back up" and get "in the mood".
Usually about a month after they have woken from brumation, breeding starts.

Hope this answered your question

How many hours of daylight do the dragons see once the hibernation period is over?
