Silk worm question

mngrivera Jan 16, 2004 02:51 PM

I just got some silk worms that are about 1/2 an inch in size. My beardie is just over 6 inches and is 2 months old. How many should I let her eat a day? This is her only live feed and she does seem to like them if I hand feed them to her.

With a dragon that young you really should be feeding crickets as the stable of his/her diet with veggies and greens. Waxworms are good because they have no hard chitin like mealworms, but they are very fatty, and a dragon doesn't get as much nutrients from them. Mealworms have hard chitin and shouldn't be given to your dragon yet. Same with superworms. They should be given as snacks..Remember the space between your dragons eyes rule of thumb for proper length of live prey to feed. My dragon is about 5 1/2 mos. now and is about 14" long...I give him about 3-5 waxworms a day...usually 3 superworms a day...about 40-50 crix, and feed him by eyedropper with mashed up greens and veggies...I only do the eyedropper feeding because that gives him a chance to kinda bond with me and not see me as a threat. He does eat greens on his own as they are in his cage to eat while I'm at work...Good luck and cute beardie!!

Thanks for your response! The thing is that I got my beardie from a person that raises them cricket free and I'm not sure if I want to go through all the trouble and smell as many people have put it. She does get Juvi. rep-cal pellets and her greens but I just wanted to give her more so I did get the silk worms because I had been told that they could be used as a staple. I have given her wax worm but very sparingly- maybe 2 times a week. If I don't do the crickets how much should I be offering her by worms??

I agree about waxworms, mealworms, and superworms.... but I've always heard that silkworms were as good if not better staple than crickets. Is this wrong?

yes silkworms are a great staple food... waxworms are high in phosphorous, and mealworms should never be feed to dragons as they are hard to digest... superworms are good but are also high in phosphorous should only be given as a treat...

if hes eating pellets and has been raised on it your lucky don't go through the cricket thing they stink and its way too much of a hassle if yours already eats the repcal pellets, and the silkworms are even better then crickets , thats an overall better staple , trust me don't make the mistake of getting him used to eating crickets if hes already eating pellets and has been raised on it, u'll regret it, u have it easy and its healthier with the pellets

He/she does goes and eats pellets and greens. I just wanted to make sure she was eating well so thats where the worms came in. But hey- no one has told me how many small 1/2 inch silk worms she can eat at a time- does any one know?? With all the talk of how troublesome the crickets are believe me I don't want to go there. With my full house the easier the better.

but ovserve him as I have heard on more than one more occasion they will eat so many they might vomit. One thing to try is only give him a couple at a time, wait a minute, then give him a couple more. Someone else in here said that's the way they do it and it seems to work better for me as well.
