Feeding Beardies

bradmtx Jan 16, 2004 03:25 PM

Having been from the old school (had beardies for 11 yrs) I have always kept crickets to fee (order in bulk of 1000). I am getting some juveniles in spring. What other alternatives do I have to feeding 2 month old beardies? I have heard of silkworms but, I understand that is strictly adult beardie food. Any help before my 10 gal tank becomes cricket haven?

Along with fresh or frozen thawed greens; like green beans, broccoli and asparagus. You can feed mealworms or my dragons favorite roaches. If you set up a colony of hissers you could feed your dragons forever with little effort to maintain the roaches.

mealworms are not good for 2 month old bearded dragon babies. Small silkworms can be fed instead of crickets (1/2 inch or smaller silkworms would be fine, depending how big the 2 month old dragons are). Various types of roaches are excellent for bearded dragons. A complete alternative to insect food would be any of the bearded dragon pellets designed for baby bearded dragons though regular supplimentation with multivitamine and calcium with D3 is still recommended.

I forgot to mention that when feeding mealworms it is best to kill them first. Just a small amount of pressure on their head will pop it and render it safe enough for you dragon. This should also be done when feeding geckos.

We are talking about juveniles here. The worms dont have to be killed for adults. I guess for now I will use the crickets then graduate to silks as they gorw older.
