Those troughs work great....but claws on metal=annoying! one 8'x4' sheet of melamine u can make a cage large enough to breed a trio in, including rocks/branches/and nest boxes. the cage will cost u about $75.00 including 2 lamps for 2 separate hotspots. I like to use shavings vs. dirt because its easier and ur ackies actually look red instead of all dirty. But peeps will really disagrre w me on that one. But a few successful breeders use this type of substrate, plus its $6 bucks for a 50 pound bag. i keep their hide boxes damp vs. wetting the hole cage. Just a few tips from a hobbyist. good luck their a great project......jason

that is the problem with giving out "tips", you need time and experience to back up what you are talking about.

cypress is $1.50 a bag, in Florida, and $50 plus in Cali. or do you know a secret worldwide source?

also, melamine is a great choice for a cage, for about 2 months. then it swells, warps, and generally disintegrates. that isn't so cool. nor affordable.

you simply can't make a wood cage as durable, and as economical, as you can a trough based setup.

and filling a 4, 6, or 8 ft trough with cypress can either be incredibly cheap (southeast) or terrifically expensive (west).

the reason "big breeders" don't sit around and give out quick, simple, "just 1,2,3" advice is because it is much more complicated than that.

everyone should be careful about the advice they get on the internet, sometimes it is not well thought out for every application.

and also please tell us who these "successful breeders" are.

when i bred argus on carpet and gave them a box full of perilite to lay in, was i successful?

also, i was not aware of the importance of an ackie not being dirty or that we keep monitors to our own convenience (noise, etc).

i am not trying to be rude, but these are a few thoughts i have.

my kimberlys would breed on my arm and in fact i once had a pair of yellow ackies that did. but now i just like watching my dirty monitors breed on what they use best or the best i have yet to give them until i find something better.

no worries man, keeping monitors is a process, you learn from everything.

top of the evening,

andrew

Some of us dont have huge breeding facilities so we have to consider that those troughs are noisy in our houses also i use contact paper on the inside of the enclosure so moisture isnt a problem and yes i can get cypress cheap....just my way of doin things, i dont like a large amont of dirt in my house (lol kindof ironic) i really enjoy ur posts robyn and chad is by far my fav football player go Hawks!

i appreciate the support, and so does Chad, and i was trying to respond to a number of posts last night in a short period, so maybe it wasn't as eloquent as it could have been...

last night was a bad night for posts, i had no intention of beefing with you, sorry to bring it up...
