Hey SUNFOX (and others) Re: Plants in Cage

alliwag Jun 05, 2003 09:07 PM

Hey, I have a cactus plant sort of like the ones I see in your (Sunfox's) tank, except mine is yellowish orange flower, not red. I thought about putting it into my uro's cage, but I was worried about him trying to eat it or getting hurt on the spines or whatever. Do you have any problems with yours? Does anybody have any ideas about cactus plants in the tank?
BTW-
Imhotep is doing great. I found out he loves clover flowers more than dandelion flowers! He finally finished up his shed, so I'm hoping he's a little more cheerful. He was definitely anti-social during his shed.
Hope everyone is doing well...

Ra has taken a bite or two out of one of his cacti and has suffered no ill effects from it. He hasn't done it since though. One of them fell over at one point and he was using the short spines to remove the shed from his belly. I checked him over and his belly is fine. I personally don't see any problem with keeping live plants in with your uro as long as he isn't eating the spines. They are a desert lizard so I would think that cacti have provided them with a good source of water during very dry spells. But I think it also varies from uro to uro. Ra absolutely refuses to eat any greens that have fallen into the sand. He'll just get a fresh piece from his dish instead.

If it can be grown in a pot (I'm not a plant person), opuntia cactus can be eaten and has a good water content. It has large, flat pads but I don't know about the spines. I have purchased this from a Mexican grocery store and chopped it up. It is eaten right away.
