Reptariums

hey all, i was just up late bored and i started checking out reptariums. What good are these things?? I mean sure they offer great ventilation, but thats about it i think. I don't have one, i was just wondering if their actually any good? The walls look like they are easily scalable by crickets, and its impossible to get the right amount of heat and humidity you need without a dozen or so lights. Does anyone use these for anything or have one? I'd like to get an education on these things if anyone can tell me any info. Just curious if theres any success with em. Thank you guys.. Later

No I don't dress my animals up except for you people, and none of you appreciate it !!! Laughing

Anyway, I have a 65 gallon reptarium for Gorgo my Mountain Horned Dragon. It is quite spacious , I use it standing up so it is tall. Have nice long limbs for her up to the basking light. I still have to put some things in it.

I do not recommend these for any kind of lizard that needs alot of heat.

It also is so tall, I have to practically hang over the side and fall in to get her water in and out. Very deep (the reptarium, not the water, hahaha)

The zippers stink at times also, the top when I unzip sometimes gets caught in the material overlap, around edges, reminds me of when I was a kid and tried to zip my coat and it caught the material. And could not get zipper to move up or down.
Ya give it a good tug and it finally moves fine again.

** BIG Negitive, you CAN NOT put the light right on the screen top, it is a nylon type stuff and will burn, so the bulb has to sit high enough up inside the lamp that it will not touch.
I have 2 small wedges of slate on either side of light dome so it sits on them and never comes in contact with the nylon top.

Have I said enough Tate? LOL it would be excellent for chameleons, and it nice for the MHD. Alot of room.

Thats about it ! Bet your sorry you asked hahahaha ! If ya email me I will send you a pic of the dang thing, if ya want a look at it.

i have a 38 gallon for my beardies sunning cage in the summertime.. and a 260 gallon for my water dragon frog.they do not hold humidity very well... but there are ways around that like having a very humid room or covering three or four sides with plastic. i love it because it is a good width and enough room for a 10 gallon pool, two trees, and mutliple hanging plants. ... and the water dragon of course.

But as eve said there are downfalls ... for one the zipper sucks.. and you can't set light fixtures directly on top but i have learned over the years to always having varying lengths of flat metal rods lying around to set lamps on . ohhhh and i can't seem to zip up the bottom of the cage because i have a plastic liner on the bottom .. and a few days ago i went to open the herp room and found tasha (one of our dogs) and frog snuggled up together.. so to say the least it is a good thing our dogs think that all other house animals are other dogs as long as they are in the house.. once a lizard is taken outside ..... lizard beware the dogs think your free game..which leads me to their next downfall. they are very light... some might say this is an upside .. but not me. because i use them for sunning cages and i would perfer that my beardie and its cage don't blow away while my back is turned... or even worse ... my dog pushing it down the driveway (which happened last summer)....and scare the bejessers out of spike....

overall they are great for animals which don't require high temps and need good ventilation like chams, water dragons , MHD's... etc...small iguanas too..and great great great sunning cages

Right on ! Said well my friend ! They are great spacious living quarters, and inexpensive compared to a tank that size,

Hey nice to see my ole beardie friend here again *SMILE*

Haha, i'm not being mean about you dressing up your animals. I think its halarious you do though haha. Anyways thank you for the info on the reptariums, i just didn't understand why they were marketed so much. I went in to petsmart the other day, and they were around the same prices as the tanks so thats why i asked how good they were, thanks for the info.

Hey, this is the cheapest place I've found where I bought my 260gal reptarium w/a long tray for my blackthroat monitor. I bought several heavy-duty clear shower curtains from Wal-Mart and hung them around all of the sides as well as a loose piece for covering part of the top. I set the whole thing on top of a piece of plywood set on top of cinder blocks. The long side is horizontal and the zipper is around the top. I've hung dome heat lamps purchased for about $6 from Lowe's around the upper bars around the perimiter. With all of this, I have found that I can look down at Goliath thru the top mesh or see him from the sides since the shower curtains are clear. For the price, the roominess, 6'l x 2'h x 2'w is great. I took some fabric glue and glued down the zipper sides so they don't catch in the zipper and I've never had a problem since. Hope this helps!
