Question about Acidophilus

BigFil Jan 16, 2004 11:12 PM

My beardies have been on Albon for the last week after they were diagnosed with coccidia. To restore the natural gut flora I bought some yogurt with active cultures which includes Acidophilus. What i'm wondering is how much should I give them everyday and how long should this be administered for? Also I got one that is plain and another that is rasberry flavored. They seem to like the rasberry better. Is there any problem with letting them have the rasberry or should I just offer the plain?

Raspberry is fine..
I don't think there is any set amount to give them. But do give it during and at least a week after the meds are finished.

I've not heard of a beardie being harmed from yogurt overdose, but I have heard they shouldn't have dairy.
I think the acidolophus pills (mixed w/water) or acidolophliz might be a better choice.

Curious as to why dairy products are bad? Good thing is I just looked at the label and it says it is dairy free. Do you think the Adidophliz will work better or faster? This has been a confusing experience trying to figure this out between the vet saying one thing, the reptile rescue lady at the Petsmart saying another, and then the forums saying another or a combination of them all. I just want my boys to feel better
(one is sleeping on me as I type this) and it's all starting to come together.....i think. One more thing should I be using pedialyte also?

I just always assumed since dairy is not a natural choice for a bearded, that was why ppl said it wasn't good for them. I'm not sure if it upsets there digestion or what.
Pedialyte wouldn't be a bad idea, or plain old water is good too. The meds can be pretty rough on their system and they need to keep from dehydrating.

I would Imagine that diary products are not good for the dragon, becuase it would cause loose stools(to put it nicely). Lactose is a sugar found in dairy, lactase is the enzyme that "breaks it down". If you do not produce lactase, as I would imagine lizards don't, you can not digest it and it can cause gastro intestinal discomfort(nicely again). I can't think of any other reason why dairy would be a problem.
