Starter Frogs

Spectabilis73 Jan 16, 2004 11:30 PM

Hello,
this is the one thing I never thought about... what frog should i get for a starter? I'm looking for one thats easy to care for, easy to breed, does well in groups and has good coloring... I was thinking auratus, but most normal frogs are colored green and black anyways...

It sounds to me that Leucomelas' are right up your alley. They fit the qualities you describe pretty much to a "T". The cherry on top is that they have a nice call as well.

True many frogs are green and black but an auratus is a nice metallic green and the patterns are unlike other frogs. Though these were my first frogs, I would probably agree with Randy. Leucomelus are nice looking frogs and the call is very nice. Either way you can't go wrong. You will be hooked once you get your 1st frogs. Welcome to your new addiction.

I'm not familiar with the leucs but they would be a good choice.I started with the Costa Rican green and black auratus and they are great frogs also.Mine are very bold and active but you have to have good hearing to hear their calls. If you want to try a Phyllobates species I'd go with vittatus. They have a nice look to them and their call is awesome!! Picking the first frog will drive you crazy but whatever your choice is, when you open the box is when the addiction really takes hold.
Have fun,

Thanks for the advice I was told though, that Leucs don't fair too well in groups... I guess you can't believe everything you hear... heh

Oh great, another addiction... just what i need, jsut like my carnivorous plant addiction, and my fish addiction, now a arrow frog addiction? whats next? :D

kyle1745 Jan 17, 2004 01:43 PM

:eucs are fine in groups, depends on the size of tank you get. I have 3 in a 20gal high and they are doing great.

Yes this is a VERY addicting hobby. I can not say that I have even had any hobby as addicting as this.
