boba fett Jan 17, 2004 01:26 AM

Hi..i know nothing about Geckos.,.,but I need to help my friend with her gecko, I just dont no the requirement it needs.
She said it is 3.5 inches total...lives in a 15 gallon aquarium, has a heating pad and no special lighting...I told her that heating pads arent rcommended because they cant burn before the lizard knows it...Im not sure what kind of Gecko she has...I havent seen it (she lives in a different state than me) all I know is that its not the kind that sticks to the glass..

i need any info from you 'experts' here....or a site with a really good care sheet.

Thanks for the time
Brad

well I believe their are only 2 possibilities on the gecko she has as their arnet that many in the us thta dont climb.if she lives in the southwest then she must have a banded gecko.Or if htis is one of those very rare cases she might have found a reticulated gecko if she lives in south west texas.it is more likely a banded gecko though as reticulated geckos are very rare.if you find it is a reticulated gecko let it go as they are illegal to keep since their endangered.the other gecko would be is she lived in southern florida it would be a yellow headed gecko.one you decide wich one you should get some good info here.

I have to ask--how is this a "rescue" if she knows nothing about the animal? I'd call it a "transfer." At least she's seeking information, though; more than most people do.

Is this an animal she caught, found in her house, or was given by someone? With the little information you've provided, it's hard to say if it's a juvenile of a larger species, or a full-grown adult; or if it's a US native or something else.

If we're talking US native, have her compare her lizard to these:

Texas Banded Gecko

San Diego Banded Gecko

If it looks an awful lot like these, then that's probably what it is.

As far as the heat pad goes, that's not necessarily a Bad Thing; I'm assuming it's not physically in the tank with the gecko but rather underneath. Make sure it's not under the entire tank (i.e. have one end with no heating, so the lizard can find a "happy medium" somewhere between full heat and no heat).

Provide a small standing water supply (I use bottle caps the size of the ones on V-8 or CranGrape bottles), and also mist occasionally.

Other than that, the care sheets she's looking for will be dependent on the outcome of the ID.

yeah...more like a 'transfer'..the guy who had it before didnt really feed it much, went to boot camp so he had to give it up. And yes...the heating pad IS IN the 15 gallon tank with the lizard. I havent seen this lizard because she lives in Boston..im in Missouri....im waiting to see if she can send a pic to me.

thanks for the time..i'll update when i get udated
