Collared Lizard beginner

freakytah Jan 17, 2004 03:59 AM

I've got an extra 20 gallon long tank sitting around after all my gecko's have died and i was trying to think of something else to put in it. I've got some beardeds already in a larger tank and really don't have any space for another reptile of size. I thought eastern collared lizards didn't get very big so i was wondering if they need a cage larger than that and how they are as pets. thanx

An empty tank doesn't have to be filled right away...I still have a 20 long and two 10-gallons that have been vacant for a long time now! The question many probably have after reading your post is, do you know why your geckos died? If it's traceable to a husbandry issue, I'd make sure I straightened that out before looking for something to put in a now-vacant tank!

What they lack in overall size, they make up for in activity level. If you're dead-set on getting SOMETHING, maybe a terrestrial snake, or smaller lizard?

ok i may have worded that bad, but my geckos didn't die from anythign i did. I research all animals I own and give them the best care. When i said i had beardeds in a larger cage i just meant that I didn't want another lizard that grows large enough to need a big cage because i didn't have room. I was just curoius how much space a collared lizard needs to be happy. If they need more I simply wouldn't buy one, they just look interesting and i've never had one. Don't worry about any animal I buy because I give them the best care that I can.

You could have one in a 20 long, but a 30 would be better for one.
** The size motto for tanks is BIGGER ALWAYS BETTER !!

Collareds are wonderful little pets, they are strikingly beautiful, active, and can become very friendly ! Good luck with your decision.
